Brazil has announced that it will cancel or restructure almost $900m (£600m) worth of debt with Africa.
Oil- and gas-rich Congo-Brazzaville, Tanzania and Zambia are among the 12 African countries to benefit.
The move is seen as an effort to boost economic ties between the world's seventh largest economy and the African continent.
Official data in Brazil show that its trade with Africa has increased fivefold in the past decade.
The debt announcement was made during the third visit in three months to Africa by Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, who attended the African Union summit in Ethiopia.
Almost all (aid) is cancellation," Ms Rousseff's spokesman, Thomas Traumann, told reporters.
"To maintain a special relationship with Africa is strategic for Brazil's foreign policy."
He added that most of the debt was accumulated in the 1970s and had been renegotiated before.
A spokesman for Brazil's Foreign Ministry told Efe news agency that the debt restructuring for some countries would consist of more favourable interest rates and longer repayment terms.
Congo-Brazzaville owes the most to Brazil - $352m - followed by Tanzania ($237m) and Zambia ($113.4m).
The other countries to benefit are Ivory Coast, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, and Sudan.

Brad Pitt: I was on drugs during marriage to Jennifer Aniston
Brad Pitt wants you to know: That time he was married to Jennifer Aniston was definitely not great.
The 49-year-old, A-list actor has cast his seven-year marriage to the former “Friends” star, whom he divorced in 2005, in a negative light – telling Esquire magazine that he was wasting his life on drugs during that time.
“For a long time I thought I did too much damage – drug damage. I was a bit of a drifter. A guy who felt he grew up in something of a vacuum and wanted to see things, wanted to be inspired. I followed that other thing. I spent years f***ing off,” Pitt told the magazine. “But then I got burnt out and felt that I was wasting my opportunity. It was a conscious change… This was about a decade ago. It was an epiphany.”
And now, he said, his relationship with Jolie and their six children have put him on cloud nine.

Actress produces Nigeria’s first hard core porn movie, receives flaks
Nollywood actress Judith Opara Mazagwu popularly known as AfroCandy has incurred the wrath of some Nigerians and her fans across the world, for producing a hard core porn movie.
Nigerians went nuts when the trailer of the movie, Destructive Instinct 3 & 4 hit the internet and the actress, who is also a musician, based in the US has known no peace since the release.
The explicit trailer of the movie shows the actress and other ladies showing off their God given assets in the full clear of the cameras while men have a go at them.
There are very real sex scenes in the movie and some of the men can be seen slapping some of the ladies’ big fat asses and also joyously squeezing their well sized and shaped boobs.
AfroCandy, known for her explicit lifestyle, posted a link of the trailer on facebook and added the comment: “No time for Haters and no shame in my game. I do what I do, don't need your stupid opinion cos it doesn't count at the end of the day. So you either get with it or get lost, or better still, stick your foot in your mouth. AfroCandy doesn't give a crap.
Interestingly not everyone was against the movie. Some fans were ecstatic about the movie.
A delighted fan said: “Hottie! keep ur game real! haters will kip hating! Thug-on gurl!!!” while another said: “Flaming hot.” A third fan also said “Haters never give gud reason, so they better go to hell.”

Dating in japan
Yoga, cooking or salsa classes are great for men because the girl-to-guy ratio works in our favor, but there's also places where the opposite is true. And the country where you definitely don’t want to be in the dating game is Japan.
According to the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, which conducts a survey of 7,000 men and women aged 18 to 34 every five years, Japan has hit a new record high for single men. The number has climbed 9.2% since they last tested in 2005, and now a whopping 61% of unmarried men don’t even have a girlfriend.
What’s scary is that the trends continue move toward singledom, with a rising number of men and women being content unmarried, as 45% of men and women that are single have no interest in finding a partner.
Japan has one of the lowest birth rates in the entire world and now it’s easy to see why.
