Nike has dropped accused murderer and double-amputee Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius after almost a week of silence.
The company froze its contract with Pistorius on Thursday.
Nike has suspended its contract with Oscar Pistorius,” said a statement released in London.
“We believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
Nike has been heavily criticized recently for being slow to respond
to its troubled athletes under contract such as Tiger Wood or Lance
Armstrong.
The company stuck by Woods after his cheating scandal broke in 2009,
but ended its sponsorship deal with Armstrong on the heels of his doping
admission.
Other Pistorius sponsors include British telecom BT, Oakley and the French designer Thierry Mugler.
None of those companies have responded to repeated requests from Forbes for comment.
Meanwhile, Nike has continued to close big dollar contracts with star
athletes; last month the company signed golfer Rory McIlroy to a $250
million contract.
