The Justice Department filed court documents Tuesday laying out its
case against Lance Armstrong, who is accused of violating his contract
with the U.S. Postal Service by taking millions of dollars in
sponsorship money while cheating to win the Tour de France.
The government had previously announced it would join the whistle-blower lawsuit brought by former Armstrong teammate Floyd Landis. The Justice Department filed its formal complaint on Tuesday, Fox News confirms.
The Postal Service paid about $40 million to be the title sponsor of Armstrong's teams for six of his seven Tour de France victories. The filing says the USPS paid Armstrong $17 million form 1998-2004.
The complaint was filed under the False Claims Act, which provides for the recovery of three times the amount the government lost as a result of the alleged violation
